When Mass Effect Andromeda first released in 2017, it was panned for its troublesome facial animations and suffered from a troubled development cycle. In fact, until the release of Anthem, many considered it one of BioWare's worst works despite it never being the lowest scored BioWare game from the developer's portfolio. Its DLC was eventually canceled and the franchise went on ice, but a few weeks ago, EA brought a ton of games to Steam.

Many players acknowledge that it's not as good as the original trilogy, which is one reason many are excited for the reported Mass Effect Trilogy remaster, but also point out that the game is mostly fixed animation-wise. To BioWare's credit, this was also mostly fixed a few weeks after release. Many praise its gameplay and combat, and some even enjoy its story, which many still agree is not on par with the original trilogy. Overall, it's a very different reception than its launch back in 2017, and that's evident by its PC metacritic user score.
Mass Effect Andromeda's PC version sits at a 72 critic/5.0 user score. It's notable that the Steam version is slightly higher than its original critic score, but even more impressive that it stands far above its user score. This is the best point of comparison here, as both are related to user scores, and it highlights a stark contrast in Andromeda's initial reception until now.
This hopefully bodes well for the future of the franchise. After the Mass Effect Trilogy remaster hopefully releases, more attention will likely be put on Mass Effect 5. Other than a likely small development team and reports of it being very early in development, nothing else is known about the next ME game, but if it continues Andromeda's story, it seems fans may be warmed up to give the new galaxy another go. Hopefully, this launch—whenever it happens—goes a lot smoother.
Mass Effect Andromeda is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
