Tools and Resources

Tools and resources provide infomation to help Solution Architects to conduct POV or workshops, respond to RFx, manage customer facing activities, support on-going product learning.

Education and Enablement

As a Solutions Architect, it is important to be continuously learning more about our product and related industry topics. The education and enablement handbook page provides a dashboard of aggregated resources that we encourage you to use to get up to speed.

Proof of Value (POV) Guidelines

Proof of Value (POV), formerly known as Proof of Concept, is conducted during the Technical Evaluation stage with Solutions Architects by prospects or existing customers to assess the required capabilities based on a set of criteria and value drivers. A POV is a collaboration between GitLab and the prospective or existing customer for evaluating GitLab. Information on the POV guidelines, POV types and process can be found on the Proof of Value (POV) Guidelines page.

Hands-on Workshops

GitLab Solutions Architects conduct hands-on workshops as interactive events for GitLab prospects and customers to learn the GitLab product and DevSecOps capabilities. Workshops may be executed as marketing events or run independently for specific customers. Detail information is provided on the Hands-on Workshops page.

RFI/RFP Responses

RFx's such as RFI and RFP are common steps in the public sector yet it may be required by enterprise customers to assess, evaluate and procure the software. Solution architects often participate in the RFP process responding to the technical asks and solutions requirements. Information on responding to the RFx can be found on the RFI/RFP page.

Product Releases

Solution architects have to keep up the pace of the GitLab monthly product releases to position feature sets and capabilities for the prospect and customer needs while demostrating the market leading position.

Following links provide product release information to assist in tehnical discussions and technical evaluation.

  • View Product Release Updates for enablement on new features in recent releases
  • Compare two releases with the What is New Since? Release Feature Overview Tool

Customer Facing Meeting Tools

Solutions Architects frequently interact with customers for demos, presentations or Q&A. These calls should enable the customer to clearly experience the value of GitLab without distraction or interruption. The below list of tools was compiled by the GitLab SA team as commonly used solutions. Note, this list does not represent a requirement to use any of these products or an endorsement for these products.

  • Muzzle to mute all notifications prior to beginning a call
  • Tab Resize Chrome plugin to break tabs into split-screen viewing
  • Screenbrush to draw on the screen
  • Toby or Tabs Outliner to launch many preset tabs at once
  • Station to group pages by application in a smart dock
  • MouseBeam enables the mouse cursor to use multiple screens like a circle
  • Rectangle to quickly move and resize windows in macOS using keyboard shortcuts or snap areas
  • Dark Reader enables browser dark mode to better fit room lighting
  • Postman for API interaction
  • Atom.io lightweight IDE text editor
    • git-plus Package for atom to make commits and other git actions without the terminal

Related macOS tips

  • Switch between full screen applications using the trackpad, Command keys or other options
  • Use the Zoom Accessibility Features to zoom in on targeted screen locations
  • Work in multiple spaces on a single monitor to keep multiple app windows or browser tabs open in fullscreen mode

O'Reilly Learning Platform

In order to facilitate an environment of learning and development, the Solutions Architect team has access to the O’Reilly Learning Platform. This education platform contains thousands of books, videos and live learning courses to assist SA’s with gaining the knowledge they need to stay competitive.

As of 2021-03-17, only the Solutions Architect team has access to the platform. If you do not already have a login, please contact your manager and they will add you to the system. New members will receive an email with instructions for how to get set up. Existing members with logins can navigate to URL listed above from your browser of choice.

As mentioned, the goal is to ensure all SA’s have easy access to information that will help them grow professionally. To that end, the SA Leadership team will, from time to time, create topical playlists from O’Reilly materials which can be accessed from within the platform. These playlists will contain recommended books, selected chapters from books and even video lessons on such topics as IaC, GitOps, Security, etc…

Additionally, code sandboxes are Included within the O’Reilly platform that SA’s can utilize to practice new skills or hone existing ones.

For a quick tour of what the O’Reilly Learning Platform can provide to our SA team, please check out this short introductory video.

By the end of FY22 Q1, we plan to incorporate the O’Reilly Learning Platform into GitLab’s EdCast installation. This will make it even easier for Solution Architects to navigate to one system and search for materials to help them level-up.

As a long time fan of Apple’s Macintosh platform I saw great features come and go: Exposé, multiple Desktops and active corners once were great features and a match made in heaven… Until they became unusuable in Lion. Their long and horribly laggy animations (even on state of the art Macs) and the fact that desktops and windows get mixed up each and every time, render them useless.

Instead of using multiple virtual desktops I bought several monitors to handle all my daily window clutter and rearranged my workflow. It all works fairly well, with one exception: Nilvana-Edges.

If you have multiple screens with different resolutions you can’t get around the fact that you cannot align them without edges into virtual Nilvana:

I’ve been waiting for an official solution for several years now. It seems that Apple does not care. So I spent the last several days creating what I find a worthy and elegant solution to that problem: MouseBeam.

MouseBeam will take care of your cursor: If it reaches an edge with an monitor attached to it and a speed with more than 20 pixels per second it will put your cursor a) in the middle of the next screen or b) to the border of it. The speed threshold will prevent accidental beams when closing windows and accessing menubar items with attached top monitor.

Mousebear Honeymoons & Vacations

Why did I make a) the default option? Well, it takes some getting used to, BUT it has improved my workflow a lot already:

  • You are most likely to access content located in the middle of the next screen
  • When navigating over multiple screens, it cuts out half of the distance in the middle
  • I stopped “searching” when it entered the screen. I know that it will be right in the middle

It has also an optional hot corners feature that will create a small deadzone in your corners so that you can still access this feature.

Table ninja for mac. When holding presentations at university or work I often ran into the very same problem with a connected projector: When I connected our university’s stone age projectors with a resolution of 1024x768 to my Retina MacBook (2880x1800) I had a tiny little edge were I could actually move my mouse pointer to the presentation screen. When you point to an important piece of code, a sales number or another specific region, you will notice that many people simply can’t see your mouse cursor.

Therefore I added a presentation mode which lets you put your data into a fitting spotlight. Configure the hotkey and you are ready to go. Press it once to enable a smooth 60fps spotlight and press it again to disable it. You can change its size any time by scrolling. Since 60fps animations are battery draining, it will intelligently slow down up to 20fps, dependend on your battery level so that your presentation won’t lose precious time. 😉

This should make MouseBeam any programmer's, designer's and presenter's best friend…
